Despite some recent rocky history with the Ford Explorer, the name recognition factor associated with the Explorer is something that the company can’t quickly recreate. Drivers are very familiar with the Ford Explorer, just like they are familiar with the Jeep Grand Cherokee. However, sales are down because, to speak frankly, there are better vehicles available out there right now. Ford Motor Company estimates that there are 4 million Ford Explorers driving around right now and that 140,000 Explorer owners trade their vehicle in on something different every year. With sales only reaching the 50,000 mark, the Explorer is going to continue to dwindle in terms of street presence.
Ford Motor Company has made some drastic improvements for the 2011 Ford Explorer model year in hopes that sales will jump back up to where they used to be. Ford managed to shave about 100 pounds off the frame so that fuel economy jumped to an average of 20 mpg; 25 mpg on the highway and 17 around town. Plus, the Explorer is now more family friendly because it comes standard with a third row. Ever since exiting the minivan competition, Ford has been struggling to create the ideal replacement, and obviously the Ford Flex was not what consumers wanted. By adding the third row and dropping the price, the 2011 Ford Explorer should see dramatic positive results in terms of higher sales!
